The following pictorial covers our recommended internal installation of The Kelly SHU FLATZ™ – Internal kick drum boundary microphone shockmount system. The drum shown here is a standard 22 x 16 inch kick drum shell.

The Patented KELLY SHU FLATZ™ boundary microphone holder is your ultimate solution for isolation and stabilization of your kick drum’s internal condenser boundary microphone. Our easy-to-install design allows the microphone to deliver a clean uninterrupted signal while providing the freedom to leave the condenser microphone in position during transport of the drum. Installation is as easy as removing and re-inserting 4 hardware screws on the interior of the drum shell. The Kelly SHU FLATZ™ does not require drilling or modification of the drum shell for installation.

GO INTERNAL!

STEP #1: Gain access to the inside of the drum and locate the 4 outermost tuning hardware screws which are in the positions shown in this corresponding photo. These screws will become attachment points for the Kelly SHU FLATZ™ rubber isolation rings and shock-mount system.

Install the Shock-Mount Rings.

STEP #2: Remove one of your pre-determined hardware screws from its tuning lug. Pass one of the FLATZ™ system leather strips through one of the supplied rubber isolation rings. Align the holes in the leather strip by wrapping the leather around the rubber ring. Pass the screw through both holes in the leather strip and replace it back into its original position in the tuning hardware.

Finishing the Shock-Mount System.

STEP #3: Repeat step two to install the remaining 3 sets of interior leathers and rubber isolation ring sets. Your installation should now look similar to the photo shown here.
TIPS: While installing the isolation rings, angle the direction of the leathers in a way so they all face toward a center point as shown in the photo.

For convenience, we recommend inserting the boundary microphone into the Kelly SHU FLATZ™ mounting base prior to moving on to the next step.

If you are installing a SHURE®, sE Electronics® OR Behringer condenser microphone:
Kelly SHU FLATZ™ units designed to support the sE Electronics® BL8, Shure BETA 91A®, Shure BETA 91® and Shure SM91® condenser microphones are packaged with two push-in retainer pegs. Insert the pegs into the holes located directly behind the microphone to retain it in the FLATZ™ mounting base. To remove them, simply squeeze the prongs together on the back side and push outward.

NOTE: The Behringer® BA 19A microphone is shorter in length that the other mics that this platform is designed to support, therefore the retainer pegs mentioned above are not compatible with this model.

If you are installing a Sennheiser E901® condenser boundary microphone:
Kelly SHU FLATZ™ units which are designed to support the Sennheiser E901® microphone arrive packaged with a hook-and-loop fastening strip. To use, insert the retainer strip upward through one of the side slots in the FLATZ™ base and pass it over the top of the microphone. Run the strip down through the slot on the other side of the mic. To secure, run the strip through the metal buckle on the opposite end, tighten firmly and press the hook-and-loop sections together.

Attach the Shock-Mount to the FLATZ™ unit.

STEP #4: Hook one of the support rings into one of the engaging hooks located on the corners of the mounting unit. Working in a diagonal pattern, next engage the support ring located at the opposite corner of the mounting unit. Repeat this process for your remaining two support rings.

Internal Kelly SHU FLATZ™ Installation Complete!

Your Kelly SHU FLATZ™ and boundary microphone are now securely supported inside the drum.

If you choose, you can connect an XLR cable to the microphone and simply run the cable out through the sound port in the resonant drumhead. As an alternative, we offer two options for routing the microphone cable out of the drum:
